Milestones

2007 Del Mar, CA

Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters honoring Mike Diffenderfer The winning shaper that first year was Ricky Carroll from Florida. Ricky is an incredible shaper (he’s a 3X winner of the Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters event – and has also won that Chunk of Foam Challenge we produced in Orlando), a great competitor, an accomplished musician and all around great human being: quiet, soft spoken, with a real discerning eye, and all of the hard core surfboard industry people really respect Ricky’s talent.

Interesting side notes from 2007:

Chris Christenson (friend), John Kies (shaped next to Diff for 20 years) and Steve Pezman (publisher The Surfer’s Journal) were the three judges.

Legendary shaper /competitor Terry Martin shaped the twist (that had moved and settled ) into the board. To his credit, Terry was the only shaper to shape the twist into the board.

In the haste of the first year tear down, I let the shapers take the finished blanks. Luckily Ricky Carroll was kind enough to give me the winning board. We now have all the winning boards from each of our Icons of Foam Shape-off competitions in our Icons of Foam legacy display at each event.

2009 Ventura, CA

Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters honoring John Bradbury; The shapers invited to honor Bradbury included eventual winner Marc Andreini, Wayne Rich, Matt Moore, Max McDonald, and Randy Cone. John was the coolest; he was cut from a different kind of cloth.

Part of who I am is because of him, and what I learned from him, and he did it better than I ever will; tooling around in his 911, or his all access Ranch pass, he was in the big leagues with Bev Morgan and the Aurness’, and he didn’t care what anyone thought or what anyone was doing, because he was too busy doing his own thing. He had saltwater in his veins.”

Perhaps the greatest accolade comes from Channel Islands surfboard founder Al Merrick, one of the most recognizes surfboard shapers in the world, “Bradbury was the man!”

To their continued credit, Channel Islands Surfboards (marketing honcho Travis Lee) stepped up and sponsored the 2009 Icons of Foam Tribute to The Masters honoring John Bradbury.

Interesting side notes from 2009:

2009 Del Mar, CA

Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters honoring Dick Brewer- In the fall of 2009 we honored the legendary RB. Wow. We were in the big time now. Brewer and his wife Sherry were very cool: honored, humbled, and enjoyed the moment. They flew over from Kauai. My beautiful wife Katrina and I had a fine dinner at Jakes Del Mar with the two of them. We asked Chris Christenson to join us.

Dick Brewer has been credited with mentoring and/or influencing more shapers than any other designer. Mark Richards, Gerry Lopez, Terry Fitzgerald, Reno Abellira, Pat Rawson, Rich Pavel and Chris Christenson are just a smattering of the hundreds of shapers all directly linked to the Brewer shaping lineage. Quite frankly the list of those influenced by RB is too long to list. His design roots are wrapped around almost every board in the water today.

The shapers competing in the Tribute to the Masters Icons of Foam honoring Dick Brewer shape-off were Reno Abellira, Pat Rawson, Dennis Murphy, Chris Christenson, Gary Linden, and Ricky Carroll. Pat Rawson won the event.
